Tense (P. P. C. vs P. P.)

I encountered an exercise as shown below and the answer given by the book is underlined.

"When Melanie came into the office yesterday, her eyes were red and watery. I think she (cry) had been crying."

I'm wondering could I use past perfect instead of past perfect continous in this exercise? For example,

"When Melanie came into the office yesterday, her eyes were red and watery. I think she (cry) had cried."

Could anybody please explain the reason? Thanks a lot.

Yes, PP is not wrong. But PPC is better, as it suggests the crying was for a long period of time.
