Tense exercise

Please correct this.

I am sitting in a coffee shop sipping coffee. If I take the subway, which also would mean taking two separate subway lines, it would take more than one hour to get back home. When I arrive home, my sister will have prepared dinner for me. But as it is, I am here at a coffee shop writing my essay, which I have to submit tomorrow. It would have been better if I had finished it earlier but as it is, I think it is better to do it now and submit it on time than not doing it and not submitting it at all. It will probably take another thirty minutes to finish my essay and after that, I will be heading for the nearest subway station.

Thank you for your help. What do you say the "than" before "not do it" is? a preposition or a conjunction?

Your correction of my sentence:

It would have been better if I had finished it earlier, but as it is, I think it is better to do it now and submit it on time than not do it and not submit it at all.
