tense correction

Hello, can you tell me whether present continuous used in these two sentences is correct? Thank you.

1) This state of anger is being maintained when students are unable to find help or are misunderstood.
2)Some children are being taught that expressing emotions is unacceptable, which increases their stress and makes them fight with each other.

Top answer

Anonymous This state of anger is being maintained Not optimal. Nothing in the context suggests that the continuous is needed or appropriate here. 'maintain' is stative, so the use of the continuous would be unusual.
