Tense correction

Hi.

1.Would you end a diary with a present tense or present perfect tenses?

Today, I went shopping and bought a shirt. It was on discount -- half off the regular price. I like the color and style. I searched for the likes of it in terms of a big discount it offered but couldn't find any. Anyway, it was/has been a great day

2.About Jane Doe who is passed away (yet with many distinctions):

She was a woman of distinction. She left many personal legacies. She is known as first woman to do this. She is the kind of woman we should look for as an example.

Hi Anon A diary is usually private - for your eyes only - so usually the writing is in your own personal style. But on the other hand, a diary is usually about the past time - what happened that day. So the most used tenses would be past (simple), or present perfect.
