Tense consistency

Hi,

A: "Why did he yell at you?"

B: "I think that the argument with his brother had been eating away at him since it happened, and that's why he lost his temper."

First he had an argument with his brother, which frustrated him, and then he started yelling at her.

I'm not sure if I should use the past perfect or not in this case. I'm referring to the past though, so using the present perfect doesn't seem right.

Thank you.
