Tense change needed?

Hi. Which is correct? Thank you in advance for your help.

He said something like he writes (wrote?) for a living.

Assuming he said "I write for a living", both "writes" and "wrote" can be used in your sentence, depending on the speaker's choice of whether to backshift. Of course, if he said "I wrote for a living" then you have to use "wrote" (or potentially "had written", or a paraphrase such as "used to write").
