Tense and word choice

Could anyone help me with tenses and word choice in the following sentences? Thank you very much for any help.

In BBC Special Forces Challenge, two women, after a myriad of intensive training, have proved to be stronger than their male counterparts when they were of six contestants remaining in the competition.

One female soldiers has saved their comrade in arms when Iraq surprisingly shot up their base at midnight.

1. Do I use the right tenses with words in red?

2. Is it acceptable to use comrade in arms nowadays because it appears old fashion according to Oxford dictionary? Are there any words that have the same meaning?

Thank you very much.
