Tense agreement

As I began to run, my backpack fell into a small hole. Just as I was about to grab it, I heard footsteps coming my way. It was my friend Chris. Chris saw me trying to reach for my backpack and asked me to hold his hand so that I don’t fell into the hole

Q. Why is the present tense used like 'don't fell' ? Isn't it correct to use the past tense?

ex) so that I don't fell into the hole ? so that I didn't fell into the hole
