Tense agreement

Ron said he has to have some medical checkups.

I have seen the sentence in a textbook and I think we use direct speech or it should be had to like

1) Ron said, "I have to have some medical checkups".
2) Ron said he had to have some medical checkups.

What do you native English speakers think? Thank you so much as usual in advance!
