His Great-great-grandfather was the deputy of Tariq Bin Zayyad and he was the first one who had set his boat on fire when Muslims reached Andalusia.

Or

His Great-great-grandfather was the deputy of Tariq Bin Zayyad and he was the first one who set his boat on fire when Muslims reached Andalusia.

Which tense should I use? Past Indefinite or Past Perfect? Please, explain with reasons. Thank You!

It should be:


His great-great-grandfather was the deputy...Zayyad, and he was the first one who set/had set his boat...Andalusia.


The past perfect is most correct, but the simple past is often used in its place.
