Tense?

Could you check this, please? I am especially worried about "Tense."

One thing that surprised me was Akamon (Red Gate). I had heard that it belonged to one of the famous feudal lords in the Edo era and its color reflects a custom observed back then. But I had never actually gone through the gate until today. It looked so huge and impressive that I found myself standing right in front of it for a while.
