Tense

"Perhaps you mean the white one". Assuming this is a response in a dialog, should it be in past or present tense? Thank you.

Anonymous past or present It doesn't matter, but use the past if you are really talking about a past time when it was meant. You mean it or you meant it just now, but you meant it last year. You can't mean it last year.
