Tense

Hi,

A: The boy ran away from home. He never came back.
B: The boy ran away from home. He would never come back.

The primary difference between the two is that the former is not temporally related to the preceding sentence, whereas the latter is affected by the time of the event in the preceding sentence.

Strictly speaking, there is nothing in "He never came back" that says that the event occured after the event of his running away from home. But the sentence "He would never come back" has an element in itself that shows the time sequence of two different events.

That said, it's still possible for you to deduce the order of the events in A. One can only come back after he has left. So both A and B end up conveing the same message, I think.

Then, my questions is why you would want to use B over A or A over B.

I'd appreciate your answer.
