Tense?

Hi thx for helping me again, just wanna ask when one is better? The discussion was in the past but until this moment it has not happened yet...

1. In 2000, I told my wife that I would not mind if our kids were to attend Christian schools. OR

2. In 2000, I told my wife that I would not mind if our kids attended Christian schools. OR

3. In 2000, I told my wife that I would not mind if our kids attend Christian schools.

The second one (using past tense) sounds a bit strange becuase the kids have not attened a Christian school yet.

The third one (using present) also sounds a bit stragne becuase the discussion was in the past so a present tense should not be used.

So, only the first one is correct?

Thx so much!
