Hi

Clarification please.

"I'd better go and pick up the car".

I think this sentence is common enough, but should we refer to future events using "had".

Yes thanks, my question was not about the contraction but the tense. Should you use "had" in a sentence that describes a future event? ie picking up the car?

'Had better' is a modal idiom, Grant, and actually, it has no past tense form. It refers only to the non-past:

We'd better pick up the car today or tomorrow.
