Alfred Dreyfus was imprisoned for twelve years before being exonerated and freed.

Guys,I guess sentence imply his exoneration as well as his being freed occurred at the same time, the idea that sounds illogical coz one should first be exonerate then freed. The time sequence here is not clear.. How can we make it a better sentence...

Can someone help me out

The sentence is fine. And doesn't mean the two things have to happen at the same time, but of course they can. He took a sleeping pill and fell asleep.

He took a sleeping pill and fell asleep.

Very few would think he fell asleep at the same time he took the pill.

Also,

He woke up and got out of bed and put on his boots.

doesn't imply the actions were simultaneous.

It's the order of the clauses that shows the time sequence. We would not say,

He put on his boots and got out of bed and woke up.

Thus, being freed and exonerated would be anomalous.

And he would have been freed the very day he was exonerated. They would have been nearly simultaneous in any case.

Au contraire, mon amie! Not in Dreyfus's case.

In fact, after reviewing the case, I realize now that it is not anomalous to say freed and exonerated, because that's the order it actually happened in. There is a gap of
