Tense

After the Civil War, contemporaries of Harriet Tubman maintained that she had all of the qualities of a great leader, coolness in the face of danger, an excellent sense of strategy, and an ability to plan in minute detail.

Guys...

Is above sentence in correct tense... Should it not be in simple present tense coz what contemporaries of...maintained is true today as well?

Am I missing sth..

Thank you

pokh Should it not be in simple present tense It would be absurd to say that a dead person has the qualities of a great leader. What sort of enterprise might they be able to lead, I wonder, in such a sorry state. pokh is true today as well But that's just it.

  • It isn't true today.
  • The only thing that's true today - and this is the part that I think is confusing you - is that people said this about her at one time.
