Tense

Hi, please help me.

"Born as an illegitimate child, at a mere 15 years of age she is heartlessly married off to a brutal and much older man after her mother died."

I heard "died" had to be replaced with "dies". But I don't know why.

It is because we need to maintain consistency in the use of tenses, that is she is (present tense) heartlessly married .....mother died dies (present tense)
