Tense

Hi, please help me.

"I saw empty glasses and knew that there had been visitors while I was out."

Is it possible to change "...while I was out." to "...while I had been out."
If possible, the two sentences have different meanings?

Top answer

Using 'while' with 'had been' would make your sentence plagued with redundancy. 'While I was out' clearly suggests the time period which you were out for. Moreover, I'd refrain from using had been in the situations where I could avoid its use.
