Tense

I don't understand why present perfect is used in the following underlined sentence. Can you help me? Can't I use present tense?

When a family member has been sick, I have gone alone to the doctor to explain the problem and to translate the doctor's susggestions. I believe it has been good for me to do all these things becasue it has prepared me for what I will face when I am living on my own.

Top answer

You can use present tense. I believe it is good for me to do all these things becasue it prepares me for what I will face when I am living on my own. The present perfect is fine too - it is a view on what has happened in the recent past.
