tense

Today, people (1) ---- (not build) huge fires any more, but their activities (2) ---- (have) a big impact on the environment. Since modern times, fossil fuels, which make machines run, and produce heat, chemicals and fumes from factories and cars (3) ---- (pollute) the air we (4) ---- (breathe), the water we (5) ---- (drink), and the soil we (6) ---- (grow) vegetables and fruit in. The impact also (7) ---- (occur) in rivers, lakes, seas, and even in oceans. High frequency radio waves from the aerials of TV, radio and mobile phone stations, radiation from nuclear reaction in industry and from nuclear power plants are causing fatal changes on genes of men and all other living things every moment.

#1 and 2 are OK, but present continuous might be better.

Yes, you are right. The writers are not native speakers. To add insult to injury, the book from which the text has been quoted is used at schools nationwide.
