tense

Hello,

1. He _____ (ate /has eaten) his food and washed the plates.

I have to fill in the blanks with the words given in the brackets.

Here both options seem right?

2. 1. He _____ (ate /has eaten) his food and washed the plates in the morning.

Here only "ate" seems right, beacuase of the presence of the finished time (in the morning).

Is my interpretation correct?
