Tennis's long-awaited changing of guard was unfolding with little drama

Hi Teachers,

Excerpts on Nadal-Federer final last year:

I woke up to Nadal steam-rolling the champ in the first two sets. Tennis's long-awaited changing of the guard was unfolding with little drama.

1. Does the first part of the sentence mean that "Nadel was fiercely looking strong making Federer work in the first two sets"?

2. What's "changing of the guard"?

Thank you.

2. Is this correct, "I woke up to Nadal who overwhelmed Federer in the first two sets by using great force"?

3. In "The Senate steamrolled the bill to defeat.", does it mean the bill is not passed?

Thank you so much
