tend/take care

Hello,
Do both sentences sound okay: "The medics were tending/taking care of the wounded soldiers."? Can I also say "The medics were tending to the wounded soldiers."?

Thank you

Can't we just say "tend the wounded soldiers"? Does it have to be followed by "to"?

Thanks, Philip

I think you're probably right. We tend the wounded, but 'tend to a wound' sounds natural to me.

I looked it up in a few dictionaries and see that they say "tend the wounded", but "tend to someone's cuts/bruises/etc." I don't know whether to trust the dictionary or not.
