tend vs want

Would you please tell me if there is a difference, even subtle, between these verbs? "tend" and "want".
e.g.
I tend to play basketball on this Friday.
I want to play basketball on this Friday.

Top answer

The first is not correct. You can say I tend to play basketball on Fridays. (tend implies "usually" so it only works when it denotes habitual behaviour) You can drop "on" in your second sentence, too.

  • The two verbs are completely different so I'm not sure why you said "a difference, even subtle".
  • "tend" means " to usually do a particular thing " whereas "want" is more like " like to do something or have something ".
