Tell/told

Are all these correct:

I’m sure Allen would understand if you tell her what’s happening.

and

I’m sure Allen would understand if you told her what’s happening.

Technically, the second one is the correct one — or the more correct one, but both are acceptable. On a different topic, I'm not aware that "Allen" is used as a woman's name, so the use of "her" instead of "his" is somewhat jarring. CJ
