Telling the time

I learnt to say "It is a quarter to six". However, recently I've seen in different sites "It's quarter to six".

Which one is correct?

Thanks.

They're both correct, or at least they are both regularly heard. I for one usually leave off the article, especially if I'm stating just the time itself. "Honey, what time is it?

"Honey, what time is it? Am I going to be late?"
"Quarter till. You've got plenty of time."
