Telling of

This afternoon, I was relieved when I received a letter telling -me- of their decision to not come with us.

I accidentally missed out the me in this sentence, but I think it sounds kind of natural, in an old fashioned way, when it is not included.

or is it just totally wrong and im thinking rubbish?

I've edited your post, Anon, because putting me in parentheses turns it into an emoticon.

Your sentence works for me.

If your question is whether you can say "This afternoon, I was relieved when I received a letter telling of their decision to not come with us", I would have to say that it sounds unnatural/awkward. This example should have an object pronoun after "telling" - in this case, "me".
