Telling a professor they have been chosen to provide information for an internship

I am in the process of writing an e-mail to one of my professors that I have had for 2 different classes. I am trying to find a way to tell them that "The application has places for names of references to contact and ask about my abilities and interests, so naturally I chose you." The end part of the sentence does not seem to come across the way I would like it to, and I was wanting assistance in re-writing it to sound nicer/more plain.

Hi How about this "The application has places for names of references to contact and ask about my abilities and interests. Therefore, I would be very grateful if I could use your name as a reference. Kind regards DocJB
