Tell / say and something / anything

Did the man tell / say anything / something?

Which of these two different choices are correct, please?

I thing both 'say' and 'tell' work here while 'anything' is the right choice.

Thanks.

I think these are possible. Did the man say something? (When there is a high expectation to get some information from the person) Did the man say anything?

  • I think these are possible.
  • Did the man say something?
  • (When there is a high expectation to get some information from the person) Did the man say anything?
  • (while even here there can be some expectation to get some information, on the face of it, it seems to convey the speaker just wants to know if the person spoke at all) I think use of tell requires the indirect object—the person to whom it is said.
