teddy

A nightie is a type of underwear and also sleepwear. It is also an intimate nightgown.

A teddy is a type of sleepwear. It is definitely a intimate one-piece garment, but is it considered as a type of underwear? Is it a lingerie?

Thanks!

I wouldn't say a nightie is underwear - it is short for nightgown - women (sometimes) wear them in bed. You don't wear it under other clothes. Over here a teddy was a type of underwear/outerwear popular about 10 years ago but I haven't seen one in ages.

  • It is a one-piece garment that is rather like a long vest shaped to fasten between the legs with poppers.
  • Women used to wear them instead of knickers and sometimes the top half would not be covered by other clothes, it would take the place of a T-shirt.

I can't find any pics of adult ones - I guess they really are out of fashion nowadays, although I suspect that there are other more glamorous 'teddies' underwear around from the pictures that did turn up. Possibly different countries use the word differently. The ones I am thinking of are very similar to this babies' vest, only a bit more shapely of course!

This is more like what I would expect a teddy to look like. The baby shirt that Nona posted would be called a "onesie" in the U.S. -- that was probably orig
