a) Before Doug died, I spoke to him regarding my ambition to be a sport therapist. I remember him/his telling me (that) "when you are qualified (you should) give my friend Andrew D. a call and/as/who might be able to help you out."

So you would personally avoid direct speech and use b over a? I wouldn't ssy I actively avoid it. I just don't use it a lot, unless it is in a context where the precise word s uttered re important.
