Team writing vs. solo writing

Hello folks,
I'm a bit concerned. A script I wrote with my partner was optioned by a small-but-auspicious producer who's shopping it around to all the usual suspects. Whoopee. We're currently unrepresented, and through a friend we met with a literary agent at one of the major agencies (NY branch).
Although he decided he's not interested in us/our script, he was generous with his time and advice. One thing he said was that if we do sell our script, we'll pretty much be committing to a team identity, i.e., no one will ever be interested in buying anything written by only one of us. He said that this applies equally to genre, i.e., our script is a comedy and therefore we'll essentially be confined thenceforth to writing comedies.
There are members of writing teams who sell scripts individually, and there are people who sell scripts in a variety of genres.

However, I don't live my life assuming I'll be on the thin end of the bell curve. I imagine (and would be delighted if it were the case) that at best I'll be in the fat middle of the curve, and I'm curious whether you think the agent's opinion is pretty accurate that chances are , if this current script goes anywhere, I'll be given a difficult-to-shake identity as one half of a comedy team.

Thanks for any thoughts.

  • -marlup[/nq] I'm hoping that what this agent actually meant to say was that any work you get OFF THIS SCRIPT or off any assignments that spring from this script will most likely go to the team and will most likely be comedies.
  • If you are interested in establishing an identity as a solo writer, or as a writer of dramas, it's really pretty simple all you have to do is write as good a script on your own (or as good a drama), and you will have reestablished yourself.

What's his height got to do with anything? Short people can do anything normal people can do, I tell ya. Being a tall person, I've always had people look up to me. But even though I look down on people, I've never looked down on people. I try to judge one and all by
