I am working in a teaching program for adults and confused over the approach. Is it better to start with basic grammer skills first, before moving on to reading/speaking exercises, or, similar to people learning english as vernaculer, it is better to let them speak/read first?

With adults, it is better to go directly into simple conversation (geared to their level) and deal with grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, etc., on an ad hoc basis as specific problems or weaknesses arise.
