Teachers! What does this sample sentence mean?

Hi, teachers ?.?

Today I looked "death warrant" up in a dictionary and it provided an example sentence "In making his announcement he has signed his political death warrant," which I couldn't understand right away!

I've made two guesses at it!

1. For all the importance of the announcement, his performance at the occasion was so poor and inappropriate that that made his political career finished.

2. He had done something wrong before the announcement and he declared at the announcement that he would end his political life as penance.

Is there an(the?) answer among them? ? ? ?

And could you tell me whether the underlined words were used correctly in the sentences? ? ? ?

Thank you so much for reading my question teachers!

It just means that by making the announcement, he has likely done substantial (and possibly fatal) damage to his political career. In other words, the announcement's impact will likely be severely detrimental to his political career.

It means that the announcement seems certain to put an end to his political career. Although we are not told exactly why, most probably it is because he said something that was thought offensive, idiotic, etc., or he unwisely confessed to some serious wrongdoing, or something like that. As a result, it seems that he will be sacked or forced to resign.
