I’m translating an editorial that criticizes Korean government’s measures on the coronavirus pandemic calling them the political-patronage tactic.

It makes a comparison between Germany and Italy to push the government to prioritize fiscal soundness rather than inject enormous money despite weakening financial health.

Below is the third paragraph out of six.

On the other hand, Italy, which is the second largest amount in debt in Europe just behind Greece, went in the opposite direction. Italy was an economic power being more prosperous than the UK. Its percentage of debt to GDP was around 40% until the early 1970s. But its pork-barreling pension system and throwing-money policies made Italy’s financial health rapidly deteriorate. Populism corrupts the people. A prime minister who tried to reduce pension benefit resigned in less than a year due to the resistance of the public. Constitutional reform foundered in spite of its budget crisis, which made further reforms in the country impossible. Its sovereign credit rating was downgraded to almost the speculative grade. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed how poor its health system is because of the lack of investment in the health service while the government pumps money to its people in cash.
