I sent you an email. Correct. Simple past.

I had sent you an email. Past perfect. Correct, but used only rarely in standalone situations (you normally need an event which it precedes, thus more context)

I am writing a SOP OR I am writing an SOP?

I need to know how you say / pronounce 'SOP' before I can tell you whether to use 'a' or 'an'?

And...

"I am writing an SOP." is correct if the letters are pronounced individually.

Use an before a word or abbreviation that begins with a vowel sound.
The letter S sounds like "es" as a single letter, therefore you would need to use an.

SOP = Statement of Purpose

SOP is also Standard Operating Procedure.

I personally have never heard it said as anything other than "ess oh pee," so it's an SOP.

AnonymousSOP = Statement of Purpose
Do you say "I'm writing a Statement of Purpose" or "I'm writing an SOP"? (If the latter, 'an' should be used as 'S' in "SOP" is pronounced as 'es'.)
