Hello teachers!I've got a teacher talk here for mock teaching contest. This is for aged 13, intermediate non-native students. (efl situation)Please read it through(it's a bit long) and give any advice if sentences are unnatural to you.As always, thanks in advance!Hello, everyone? Welcome back to the happy happy English class! How are you today? Good? All right. I guess everyone is ready here, so let’s skip the roll call.
Let’s see. Are all of you with the textbook? Show me your textbooks and pens, please? Thank you.
Okay. Then open your book to page 87, we are still working on lesson 6, Songs of Hope.
Before getting started, shall we check what you learned last class? Please have a look at this review quiz.
Jessica says, “My team won first prize at the contest.” Then what would you say if you were Sunny?
Yes!! Good for you, Jennifer! That’s correct! Yeah, we’ve learned how to praise someone last class. Then, except for ‘good for you,’ what would you say to compliment someone?
(writing on the board) well done / excellent / good job ...
Perfect! You are doing very well! But, there is one more thing that I’d like to tell you. While I marked your last formative tests, I found that many of you are confused with ‘you did a good job’ and ‘you have a good job.’(writing on the board next to ‘good job’) Both look very similar but ‘you have a good job’ is totally different from ‘you did a good job.’ Here, ‘a good job’ means ‘a good job’ itself! Such as a doctor, a lawyer, or a scientist. However, this means ‘you did something really good.’ for complement. Got it?

Good job, kids! and please don’t forget it again.
Fine, Today, what you are going to do is about phone talks. Here we have today’s goals. Why don’t we read aloud altogether? Ready? Number one, Go. okay. and number two, ready, go. and three. ready, go! Yes, in about 15 minutes, you will be.
For doing these, you’re going to look over some important expressions on the phone. Then, after watching a sample video clip, let’s do an activity, having a telephone conversation with your partner. So far, so good? Okay, great. If there is anybody who doesn’t understand, just ask me.
So, when you are on the phone, what would you say? or how would you respond when you get a call? What is the first thing you say when you call someone?
Hello!
Yes, the first thing you say when you call someone is, "hello."
Then, you need to ask if you can talk to the person you want to talk to.
Repeat after me: "May I speak to Tom?" Or "Can I talk to David?"
Here's one more expression that you can use: "Is Minsu there?"
Good. So, you can say, "May I speak to ~?" "Can I talk to ~?" or "Is ~ there?" when you are looking for someone over the phone.
Then what kinds of reponses would be possible?
"Hold on, please."
Is there any other expression you know that you can use in this situation?
- Wait a minute, please
- Hold on a second.
Yes, you can use other expressions like Wait a moment., hold on a minute, and so on. when you want to ask someone to wait. Now, if someone called the wrong number you can say, "You've got the wrong number." Yes. And the caller is looking for David. But there's no one named David there. Then, you can say, "There's no one here by that name."
These are common expressions you can use on a telephone conversation.
Please remember them and Now, I’m going to give you activity cards like this one.
you can see some cards that describe a situation. I will take one card for example. Ta-da! So, what's the situation in this picture? I call Angelina Jolie, and her husband, Brad Pitt answers the phone. What Brad and I have to talk about are below. Then, what we're going to do is take turns turning over one card at a time and having a telephone conversation according to the situation on each card. Did everybody get it? Good. Then let’s watch a sample video clip.
Just like this, can you make a telephone conversation with the information? Please work in pairs and make a conversation with the situation on the cards you pick. If you have any problems like you don' understand the situation, or you can't make a dialog, please just let me know. Okay. let's start. I’ll give you 3 minutes and don't forget to take turns!
Time’s up, class! Have you all done? Brilliant! Then, let’s check how you’ve done. Of course, if you volunteer and do right, I will give you an extra score! Who goes first?
Well done! Now that we practice the phone-call expressions, how about going over through a short test? I’m going to give you handouts with 6 questions. Did everyone get it? This is really easy if you did your best in class, I’ll give you 2 minutes. Are you ready? Let’s start.
Cool! Today, you practiced many useful expressions. Was it fun? Next time, we will read ‘Songs of Hope’ from page 107 to 110. Shall we watch a preview clip super-quick?
Yes, we are going to read about Jirani Children’s Choir? Are you getting curious? This is your lovely lovely homework! Please write down 5 words you can think of from ‘Jirani Children’s Choir.‘ What does it remind you? What image does it bring up? Just 5 words on your notebook. Is it clear? Brilliant!
Thank you for your attitudes! See you next time guys.
