I can't speak for much older varieties of English. It's possible that such a construction was used 600 - 800 years ago, but it's not used in modern English. Now it's just "teach" or, less often I'd guess, "teach about".

It sounds a little old-fashioned to me, but not that far back. There's not much in COCA, but COHA and Ngrams have a few examples.
