Task2 essay

Hi,

Would you please check my Task 2 essay?

In some countries, people who commit less serious crimes are made to undertake community service instead of a prison sentence. Some people believe that all people who have committed a crime should be sent to prison. Do you agree or disagree?

Perhaps one of the gravest concerns in today's world is the appropriate action which should be taken regarding those who commit a crime. For some reasons, the common practice in some nations is to force criminals with petty crimes to to carry out community service in preference to being sent to prison. It seems that the idea of prison sentence for all law breakers is a half-baked one.

Primarily, that those who break the law often are not habitual criminals would make the prison sentence ineffective. Such people drift into crime owing to various reasons ranging from unemployment to living bellow the poverty line. The remedy for such people does not lie in spending long periods in prison. Instead, they can be shown the ways to tackle their problems, and being involved in community services could prove quite helpful in this regard.

Far from the point mentioned, it is imprisonment that could dramatically leave a mark on the prisoners. Those with petty crimes who have spent years in prison are more likely to become hardened criminals, thus wreaking havoc on the country's safety. A person accused of shoplifting, for instance, might have no ideas of how other crimes are organized and by spending time in prison, they will form casual acquaintances with other professional criminals, learning how to do more serious crimes such as abduction.

Nevertheless, it should also be admitted that putting all offenders in prison can be constructive. If the citizens, especially those who are highly likely to break a law, are aware that they have to spend long years of their life in prison with harsh conditions, the tendency for committing a crime will decline and hence lower crime rates.

To sump up, it would appear that considering prison sentence for all cannot be a well-thought solution, in particular for those who do not turn to criminal actions for the sake of it, but for their poor living conditions. However, the deterrent effects of incarceration are always obvious.
