The bar chart shows data about the most popular sports played in New Zealand in the year 2002.
Overall, there were significant differences between the percentage of boys and girls who took part in most of these sports. However, the rate who participated in basketball and tennis was similar.
Among girls, netball was the most popular sport, at about 25% of girls played it. The figure for swimming was slightly lower, at around 22%. About 8% and 7% of girls took part in tennis and basketball respectively. There were 6% of girls played soccer and 5% of girls enjoyed athletics, while only 3% and 1% of girls enjoyed martial arts and cricket. The figure for other sports was over 10%.
However, among boys, only 1% played netball. Around 25% of boys took part in soccer, compared with 13% enjoyed swimming and 11% played cricket. These were followed by cricket, martial arts, tennis and basketball which all had figures of between 11% and 8%. The propotion of boy who played other sports was about 18%
