Task from a russian version of A-level exam

None of the entrants___(win) the competition, but the couple pressed on and eventually got the backing of British Airways, who sponsored the project.

I don't know if the correct answer is "had won" or "won".

Depending on the point of reference (i.e. the time) of the narrative, it can be either. If the narrative is "linear" (i.e. first this happened, then that happened), only the simple past - "won" - is correct. For example:
There was a competition. None of the entrants won the compet
