Advertising discourages people from being different individuals by making us all want to do the same and look the same. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In today’s world, advertising plays an integral part in our day-to-day lives. I partly agree that advertising encourages people to be the same rather than different individuals.
Multiple companies have their own marketing campaigns to promote their products and one of the most widely-used methods is celebrity endorsement. Famous stars who are highly respected and adored by a large number of people will make use of their reputation to lure people to buy the products that they represent. For example, if a celebrity wears a specific set of clothes of a brand, her or his fan may undoubtedly make a purchase of that item because they think they will be successful like their star just by wearing the same clothes. It is the advertisement which makes people buy items impulsively to be the same as the celebrities and therefore, the more people do that, the more identities will be lost.
However, to some extent, advertising can help people to be different from each other. Customers have the right to decide what to buy due to useful information provided by advertisements from various brands. In other words, each person has certain interests and distinct characteristics; therefore, they can purchase items to make them special and outstanding with the help of commercial or online advertising. For instance, instead of choosing Coca Cola as their favorite drink, customers can pick other brands such as Pepsi or Fanta as their option of beverage when watching advertisements on the TV.
In conclusion, while celebrity endorsement can influence people's choice of products which make them become common among the others, the large amount of advertising from a wide range of products can help people to buy things depending on their own interests and make their own decisions.
