Question: In the developed world, average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of ageing populations.

Answer:

It has become a common notion that people living in industrialised nations expect themselves to live longer than ever before. While this trend may lead to some negative consequences, I believe there are certain measures that individuals and society can take to mitigate these potential problems.

As the ageing population in developed countries is increasing, related issues arise, and those issues can be anticipated. The major one is greater tax burdens for the working class. That is because there will be more people of retirement age hence a drop in the number of working adults. This also leads to the fact that governments will receive less money and they have to impose higher tax rates on people who remain in the economy as a result. Another problem is that it exerts pressure on the government for greater demand in healthcare and for the allocation of pensions. It includes a significant rise in nursing homes, facilities for elderly people, and services, while the number of people who are eligible for receiving pensions surges.

However, society, especially governments, can take steps to tackle those potential problems mentioned above. Firstly, it is essential to increase the retirement age, therefore more people can remain in the workforce and contribute more to the national economy. The age must be thoroughly discussed before entering into force. This also helps to cushion the financial hit that comes from the growing size of ageing population. Another measure that can be taken is imposing spending cuts on other areas of national budgets. That money will be used for improving vital healthcare, accommodation, and transport facilities for the growing number of working citizens.

In conclusion, there will undoubtedly be some bad-side effects as the ageing population increases, however, various measures can be taken into consideration to tackle these problems that arise.
