Question: University students are increasingly studying abroad as part of their studies.

Do the advantages of studying abroad outweigh the disadvantages?

Answer:

At the present time, the number of students who choose to get to a foreign country for university is increasing. While a chance to study in prestigious universities benefits students in their future occupation, they also have to face challenges created by their linguistic ability and limited income as well. From my perspective, the positive impacts of overseas experiences eclipse the negative ones.

Studying abroad brings some significant downsides to students’ experience. First of all, language is a crucial aspect if students want to study overseas since it directly determines their success in terms of comprehension ability and daily conversations. Without the proficiency in the language of the country they want to study at, students may suffer from misunderstandings or misinterpretations, which later lead to culture shock and homesickness. Secondly, students who study in foreign nations without any financial aid may find it difficult to pay their bills due to the fact that the living expenses in developed countries are much higher than that of their mother nations. For instance, the amount of money that a student who studies in Singapore has to pay for one lunch can support his or her whole family a whole day in Vietnam.

While these aforementioned drawbacks are irrefutable, in today’s increasingly globalized world, oversea experiences offer students note-worthy benefits. Studying in other countries means that students can experience exposure to multiple types of people in the world. As a result, students’ insight and engagement are raised along with the remarkable decline of racism. The second advantage of living far from their families is that students can build independence and life skills which they are incapable of when residing in their homeland. For example, some international students reported that thanks to their overseas experience, they had become more self-reliant and able to support their own needs. Lastly, the major reason why students choose to study abroad is better career opportunities. In other words, the fact that a person is an international student is an attractive aspect when prospective employers consider hiring a candidate.

To conclude, studying abroad affects students both positively and negatively in different circumstances. Nevertheless, to me, the good points heavily overpower the downsides because of their impact upon students’ future career.
