TASK 2 IELTS: PLEASE CHECK MY ESSAY

Question:

Some people believe that university students should be required to attend classes. Others believe that going to classes should be optional for students.

Which point of view do you agree with? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer.

Answer:

It is compulsory in most Vietnamese universities that students take class attendance. Personally, I strongly disagree with this point of view. I think attending classes should be optional for university students.

To begin with, regularly joining classes at school does not guarantee the best result in terms of knowledge gain or grades. There are other external factors such as attitude, background knowledge, or practice frequency that affect students' performance in learning. For example, instead of making great use of the lessons provided in classes, the students spend most of their time gossiping, playing mobile games, or multi-tasking. Therefore, the time being in class appears inefficient and can even act as a deterrent to their speed of learning.

Additionally, even if they put 100% of their energy and concentration into the lessons, there are still chances that they might fail the exams. One of the reasons is because of lacking extended studying. About 50% of the information might be given in the class, however, the other 50% can be found from other sources available in the library, on the Internet, or during extra discussions with the lecturers. Only fixed with the materials given in the class, as a result, can limit their potential of going far and deep with the topic. Also, the style of exams has been greatly varied with multitudinous techniques to test a student's comprehension of the lessons, so students must be more flexible when it comes to finding study resources.

In brief, classroom attendance is just part of the learning process, it is definitely not the one-size-fits-all approach. Therefore, with the reasons mentioned above, it is beneficial that we should consider attending classes an option, and encourage students to experience different learning styles.
