In some cultures, children are often told that they can achieve anything if they try hard enough.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of giving children this message?

Personal achievement and success in life are becoming more important in many countries nowadays. Life is becoming more and more competitive, and there is increasing pressure on individuals to keep trying harder and always strive for more. In fact, some modern cultures are teaching children that they must always do their best, and that they can achieve any goal they set for themselves. Although this approach in life can have certain benefits, it also brings some drawbacks.

On the one hand, encouraging children to try their best may be beneficial. To begin with, being told not to give up may give youngsters a stronger sense of confidence. This is especially true for some children who may be living with physical disabilities or studying in difficult circumstances. There is every likelihood that they will benefit from any motivation to overcome difficulties. Stephen Hawking, for instance, who was diagnosed as having an incurable and highly debilitating disease, has now been recognized as one of the greatest physicists of all time. This is due to his wife’s encouragement to fight against the deadly disease as well as his tireless efforts in physics.

On the other hand, despite its advantages, this approach can have several downsides. In the first instance, making an attempt without any evident results may be counterproductive and even demotivating. As they are still young and do not have practical experiences, they are likely to be discouraged by failures. Hence, teenagers are prone to endure stress and they may find it worthless trying to solve any problems they confront. In addition, trying without any assistance, support or guidance is hardly effective. This is because teenagers are not mature enough to do everything by themselves. Without any guidance, success is likely to be temporary or far from their reach.

In conclusion, although telling children to work hard may help them to be more confident, striving in vain and lack of support from adults are the main reasons for their failures.
