It is neither possible nor useful for a country to provide university places for a high proportion of young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In a knowledge-based society, almost every high school student would choose to pursue tertiary education after graduating. Some people say that governments should not provide places in university for a large proportion of students since it is impossible and useless. Personally, I disagree with this point of view because I believe it is impossible yet useful.
On the one hand, I agree that providing university places for a majority of youngsters is not possible for a variety of reasons. From an economic perspective, running enough universities to educate the increased number of students would be undeniably costly. The amount of money needed to build universities would place a large financial burden on the government, while they have to allocate budget to other significant fields such as environment and military. In terms of education, teaching a large number of students would decrease the quality of the lessons because professors do not have enough time to teach every student and have to make the curricular generally in order to suit everyone's academic power. Therefore, universities could not fulfill their duty of providing advanced-knowledge students.
On the other hand, I think it is useful for teaching a high proportion of young students in universities. The main reason is that universities could create a large workforce equipped with in-depth knowledge for society when they graduate. This will help increase labors in jobs that require a certain level of academic knowledge, including doctors and scientists. For example, because of the covid-19 outbreak, every nation in the entire world lacks doctors and scientists to take care of patients and find a cure or therapy for this international pandemic.
In conclusion, while it is impossible to provide every student with a place in universities, I believe that letting as many students as possible attend universities is useful.
