In many countries, students attend private 'cram schools' for extra coaching in test-taking techniques. What is your view of this practice?
Privately owned preparation centres are quite popular in certain parts of the world, providing guidance with entrance exams of professional institutes. In my view, although a few of these centres provide sufficient support to students, most of them are in the business to gain profit by taking advantage of these desperate students and their parents.
A limited number of spots available in prestigious universities make the enrollment process exceptionally gruelling. These coaching centres help students with the complicated application process. Many of the success stories regarding getting admissions in these professional institutions are tied up with these private teaching centers that have provided guidance and support in exchange of hundreds of dollars. However, parents readily spend this money at the prospect of the bright future of their children. If these centres deliver according to their promise then this money is considered well spent.
Unfortunately, out of those training schools, many compromise on the quality of the services they provide. In order to make higher profits, an unlimited number of students study in these institutes for which they are unable to provide individual attention. For instance, in my hometown Karachi, Pakistan, there are numerous such establishments where thousands of students learn everyday, but only a handful of them gain admission into professional Institutes. What happened to the rest of the students? They are left with no option than to let go of their dreams of achieving higher education at their chosen university.
To conclude, in my opinion there are only a few training institutes that actually provide sincere support, while the rest accept far too many students and because of this their quality of education suffers.
