An increasing number of people are buying what they need online. What are the advantages and disadvantages for both individuals and companies to shopping online?

Over the last decade, online shopping has become increasingly popular. Where it saves time for the consumers, it also creates an intense competition among the various businesses.

One of the considerable benefits for online shoppers is that they save time with e-shopping. Just with a click of a button at their own leisure, they can order what they wish for.Similarly, its advantages are not only limited to the consumers, different online portals are also positively impacted by it, such as saving money by downsizing. When companies enter the world of virtual shopping, large display areas and showrooms are not needed anymore. Additionally, they can make many positions redundant as well. For instance, Ikea which is a major furniture retailer, whose primary focus is internet trading. They claim to make their significant profit through selling items over the internet rather than in-store. For this reason, they have closed many of their large warehouses or converted them into pick up locations for the clients to collect their product after purchasing it through their website.

In contrast, there are a few drawbacks of using e-commerce as well. For individuals, lack of personal experience is on the top of the list. Many people who visit malls and buy groceries claim that they do not enjoy shopping through machines as it lacks human interaction. However, for corporations an increasing competition is troubling. Larger businesses markedly reduce the prices as buyers go for the cheaper cost. For example, EBay, the largest e-commerce website, has caused many smaller shops to go out of business.

To conclude, while customers save time with online shopping, it leads to many companies not able to survive the cut-throat competition and go bankrupt.
